Firstly, let’s start off with the history behind the making of Magic Orange – Entertainment.

In the summer of 2018, myself and my little tribe (my partner, son and daughter) went on a family holiday and visited Powderham Castle in Devon UK. I am a big castle fan, and I share a love for architecture of historical buildings. I like seeing the fortified manors, ancient deer parks and majestic rooms.

Little did I know or expect the next two events would take place. Bringing me to write about this journey or even be the start of creating an entertainment company based in the Cotswolds and various areas of the UK. Let alone lead me to what you are about to read next. I strongly believe, if these events did not take place, being a magician would never have found me. I would not be performing magic as a craft for my ever so thankful paying customers.

The amazing news I received before I even knew I would be a professional magician

On our tour throughout this stately manor house, in one particular room was an ornate metal lamp hanging from the ceiling. Myself and partner stood underneath, looking up at this lamp. The tour guide educated us both and a small crowd of others about the history of the family. Along with many artifacts in this room. The tour guide also told a story of a magic lamp. She went on to say “Legend has it, that any woman standing underneath this lamp (some women in particular who have struggled to conceive), will be blessed with the news of a new born child”.

The tour guide then pointed to the metal lamp hanging above our heads. To an immediate effect, I jumped out of the way whilst a few chuckles in the room were heard.

Less than two weeks after our arrival home from holiday, I received the news I would be a father of a third child!

How a tour guide gave me the idea of a magic fruit

The Tour guide informed me of an event that Kitty was holding on the completion of the music room. This was in an attempt to show off his wealth and impress his guests. Each guest received a single orange fruit upon their arrival. Oranges in the Georgian era would only be available to the wealthiest people, due to there exotic healthy nature. These oranges came with a cost of £2000 (which is about 25k in today’s money). Along with other items of high spending and debts that could not be paid, Kitty fled to New York in America.

The second story I was told by the tour guide, in another room of this ancient castle belonging to one family follows below.

This room was heavily decorative with gold gilding. A stunning lavish style, that oozed wealth from the ceiling to its flooring. William ‘Kitty’ Courtenay The 9th Earl of Devon and 3rd Viscount Courtenay of Powderham, who led an excessive flamboyant lifestyle. This young lord was responsible for the extension of this music room in the 1700’s.

The marvelous orange tree illusion, that finalised the foundation in relevance behind Magic Orange - Entertainment!

Secondly and the final part of my story to using Magic Orange Entertainment as my business name, and the link between the victorian style logo.

In the 1830’s, magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin was claimed a technical genius for creating the illusion of the magic orange tree. To which a lady would be selected from the audience, her wedding ring placed into a handkerchief and vanished. The illusionist Houdin would draw attention to a small potted orange tree on a table. This lady would then be asked to fire a gun at the mechnical magic orange tree (Houdin was a watch maker in his younger days for his father).

In amazement, the automation of the orange tree would bloom real orange flowers. The petals would then fall on the table and real oranges would grow. Remembering this is a very realistic piece of mechanical apparatus. The magician would pick these oranges from the tree and toss them into the audience. This was so they could be peeled and tasted. Proving that they are a real orange fruit.

A final orange on top would grow and then split open. The lady’s handkerchief would start to rise. Two butterflies would pull it up from the corners, and the spectator’s ring would be in the center of this.
