What is the art of card manipulation called?
Updated: 03/03/2023
Firstly, card manipulation is a branch of magic used as the art form called, sleight of hand (which means quick fingered). The common Latin and French synonyms include prestidigitation and legerdemain for a sleight of hand artist. Familiarly, called a magician.
Secondly, sleights or card manipulation are usually performed on stage, in front of an audience. A magician in modern magic, can perform their conjuring skills within a close crowd. This can be of up to 3-4meters using ‘close up magic’. This is great for a private party. Some call this ‘strolling magic’ or ‘table to table magic’. Hypothetically, these are the exact same thing. It’s also an amazing way to entertain guests at a birthday party. In addition, keeping guests entertained at a wedding venue.
How do magicians do magic with playing cards?
If you are here to simply search for the answer on “how to do magic tricks?” Unfortunately, I can’t give that type of inner circle information away. This goes against all ethics as a professional magician. Along with building a reputation and what it furthermore, stands for. But what I can say is, a lot of time and practice goes into learning card manipulation techniques and even a magic card illsuison. In fact, most artist’s lifetimes are spent learning this dexterity.
Creating physical illusions is the core aim with card manipulation, that are undetectable to the magician’s audience. While it’s the magic tricks that grasps people’s attention (so you would think!), it’s actually down to a magicians performing style. Even the hardest of illusions to master can be pretty boring, without any type of patter, theatrical and individuality! Therefore, adding all the said flavour to the most basic sleight of hand can make it out of this world!
Why do illusionist's use cards in conjuring?
The 1500’s were when playing cards first became popular for magicians. This was probably down to how readily available these cards were and reasonably priced to use as a prop. Over the course of time, thousands of effects have been created. If not the same again, in complex sleight of hand methodology.
Using playing cards for card manipulations, has also became very popular with the modern day magician. Due to the ease of availability and the mysterious nature they create. This is purely down to one reason, no gimmicks are being used!
